Parasite stands as one of the movies that took film lovers by surprise. Considering that the hails from an Eastern culture, it is quite unbelievable that it can achieve so much success, compared to European and American films. All the same, there are a lot of things that critics and film lovers have said about this movie. Here is a breakdown of the best Paradise movie reviews that you should know about.
Plot Summary (Spoiler)
The movie involves the Kim family, which is a low-income family living in a cramped basement and earns a living through the folding of pizza boxes. The only son of the family, Kim-Woo, is promised by his friend Min-hyuk of an opportunity as an English tutor to a wealthy family Park family daughter, Da-Hye. Kim-woo introduces himself as a university student, and Mrs. Park decides to call him Kevin.
Kim’s family end up seizing different opportunities in the Park’s family through infiltration. Ki-Jung, the daughter to Kim’s poses as Jessica, who is an art therapist who can help the Parks son Da-song with his restlessness. Ki-taek, the father to the Kim’s, takes over as the Park’s chauffeur after Ki-Jung frames the former driver of having sex in the vehicle. Finally, their mother, Chung-sook, takes over as the family’s housekeeper after the Kims convince Mrs. Park that Moon-gwang has tuberculosis hence her allergy.
Chung-sook discovers that Moon-gwan’s husband has been living in the Park’s house bunker, as he has been hiding from loan sharks long before the Park’s moved into the house. Moon-gwang convinces Chung-sook to conceal this secret as she keeps their secret as well. Soon, the Kims are forced to flee from the Park’s after a brawl break between their mother and Guen-Sae, ending up wounding Moon-gwan.
Later on, Guen-Sae stabs Ki-Jung during Da-song’s birthday, who is killed by Chung-sook with a skewer. Mr. Park reacts from Guen-Sae’s disgusting smell, which annoys Ki-taek and stabs him and flees the scene.
From the plot summary, it is clear that the storyline is juxtaposed between two families with different economic capacities. It shows a marvelous connection of a narrative of how wealthy families disgust the poor and how the poor try to survive by scavenging from the rich. It also shows that the poor can fight to ensure that their integrity is upheld.
This is evident with the stabbing of Mr. Park by Ki-taek, who is disgusted by the smell of Guen-Sae. This happens in the wake of the beef between Kim’s family and the Guen-Sae. This is a common story between two socioeconomic classes, which can happen anywhere other than South Korea.
Other reviewers would point out the ambition that members of the low socioeconomic class have towards achieving success. This is portrayed in the way Kim’s family plot to overtake every job offer in the Park’s family, although in a corny way.
The movie also peels the layer of privilege that the rich have and their patriarchal cruelty. Yeon-Kyo, Mr. Park’s wife lives in fear of her husband and also instinctively prioritize the needs of her son over her daughter’s need.
This is an accurate model of a modern-family wealthy family, especially one that is filled with patriarchy. On the other hand, Kim’s family portrays a modern-day low-class family that covets the success of their employers, although it is a more loving and stable family compared with their employers.
Finally, the metaphorical representation of the title Parasite leaves the audience in suspense, which is something to behold. It is hard to deduce whether the reference is done to the Park’s family, the Kim’s or Guen-Sae, and his wife. This is left to the movie fans to decide based on their understanding of the plot.
When Parasite become the first Korean movie to win the Palme d’Or of the 2019 Cannes Film festival, this highly indicated that there is something great about it. Also, with its awarding of the Best Picture Film from the Washington Area Film Critics Association, this makes it clear that Parasite is one of the best movies to have ever graced our screens in 2019.
